Morpheus8 vs. Traditional Skin Resurfacing: Which is Right for You?
Traditional skin resurfacing is an effective and popular skin rejuvenation treatment with many uses and benefits. It’s a great choice for many as it’s not particularly invasive, painful, or risky, though different methods have different pros and cons.
Some methods of skin resurfacing are better than others and the right one for you depends on many things. You’ll need to consider your goals, your concerns, your skin type, your age, and even your budget.
Traditional methods include microneedling, microdermabrasion, and even certain medical-grade chemical peels. The Morpheus8 device is a more recent and more innovative option, however, and is often gentler and more effective. Read on to learn more about the Morpheus8 and decide if it’s right for you, or not.
What is Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing refers to a treatment wherein the top layer of dead and/or unhealthy skin cells is removed and a smoother, healthier layer is revealed. Often, this new skin looks and feels better, offering a nice glow and a better appearance. Through the process, collagen and elastin production are naturally boosted and various conditions and concerns are addressed.
Skin resurfacing can tackle:
- Scars
- Acne
- Wrinkles
- Fine lines
- Cellulite
- Sun damage
- Uneven tone or texture
- Small, stubborn areas of unwanted fat
- And more
There are a few ways to achieve this. Some of the most popular skin resurfacing methods include:
- Microneedling – where a device rolls over your skin and causes multiple “micro-injuries” thus stimulating your skin’s natural healing process.
- Microdermabrasion – an abrasive instrument is used to gently “sand” the surface of your skin, removing the outer layer and revealing healthier skin underneath
- Chemical peels – this method uses a face mask or other topical treatment to chemically dissolve or peel away the top layer of skin.
- Laser treatments. Devices such as the Morpheus8 radiofrequency treat the skin’s surface with heat and yield the desired results.
Morpheus8
The Morpheus8 is a revolutionary new skin-tightening treatment that offers you the best of both worlds. It combines laser technology with the effective art of microneedling. This dual treatment offers maximum efficacy and many amazing benefits:
- It treats various skin concerns while addressing unwanted fat at the same time
- It features different configurations for different areas of the face for maximum benefit
- It’s suitable for treating even the smallest of areas that are difficult to treat with other methods
- You’ll see results after only a few sessions
- There is minimal downtime and recovery needed
- It’s safe for multiple skin types
- It boosts collagen at the subdermal level
Morpheus8 Risks
Although the device is gentle and non-invasive, there are still some risks associated with laser skin tightening:
- Redness, swelling, itching after treatment
- Pain or discomfort during or after treatment
- Acne may become worse if you apply too much thick cream shortly after treatment
- In more serious cases, infection, scarring, and hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may occur (skin becomes darker or lighter after treatment)
Although you do assume these risks when receiving laser treatment, they are much less likely to occur when performed by a trained professional in a proper clinic setting.
Who is a Good Candidate?
The Morpheus8 device is gentle and versatile, but it’s still not for everyone. It’s always best to speak with a medical professional before proceeding with a treatment like this. They may recommend against laser skin tightening treatments under certain conditions:
- If you have an autoimmune disease, a weak immune system, or have a connective tissue problem
- If you have a history of keloid scars
- If you’ve had radiation therapy on your face
- If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you’re prone to cold sores or have a recent history of them
- If you’ve taken an acne medication known as Amnesteem (isotretinoin) in the past year
- If you have darker or very danned skin. This doesn’t automatically count you out, but certain skin tones may present a bigger risk. This should be discussed with our professionals before beginning.
- Diabetes and other chronic conditions may affect results. Our skincare professionals can go over this with you in more detail.
- It’s best to quit smoking for at least two weeks before treatment for optimal healing conditions and the best possible results.
If any of these things are of concern to you and/or your doctor, it may be best to pursue other methods of skin resurfacing. For example, regular microneedling will have similar effects, but without the benefits or risks of the laser.
Chemical peels are also a fantastic option for many as they are completely non-invasive and can be tailored to your needs and desires. Our skincare technicians can work with you to create the perfect chemical peel treatment plan if you have sensitive skin or other concerns that rule out laser treatment.
There are several other factors to consider when deciding which treatment you want, such as:
- Although the treatments themselves are quick and easy, many clients require several Morpheus8 treatments to see optimal results. This requires a commitment over several weeks or months.
- Many find the Morpheus8 treatments to be worth the investment, but it’s still much more expensive than its alternatives.
- Morphus8 is a professional device and should only be handled by qualified professionals. Even better is when you can get someone with lots of experience. This is how you eliminate any discomfort and minimize the risk of side effects. You shouldn’t receive treatment from anyone who isn’t qualified and doesn’t make you feel 100 percent comfortable and confident. Microneedling and certain chemical peels can even be done at home if you can’t travel.
