How to Prepare for Your Skin Tightening Treatment
Skin tightening is one of the many wonderful treatments we offer at our Toronto clinic. It’s a gentle, non-invasive treatment designed to tighten loose skin and give you the contoured look you’re after. It’s the perfect way to fight and reverse the signs of aging, and/or tighten up loose skin after losing weight!
Although it’s a quick and gentle procedure, there are still some things you can do to make it more effective and yield the best results. Some things you must do on the day of while others are best started days or weeks prior.
None of the pre-treatment instructions are complicated, but you should keep them all in mind. Read on to learn all about how to prepare for skin tightening treatment.
What is Skin Tightening Treatment?
Our skin tightening treatments are done with the Venus Legacy device. This device uses radiofrequency technology to gently heat and eliminate fat cells under the surface of your skin. The treatment also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, improving the firmness, plumpness, and appearance of your skin.
After a few sessions, the reduction of fat cells and additional collagen production causes your skin to naturally tighten up and contour itself. No harm is done to the skin and the procedure is painless throughout.
Skin tightening is a popular facial treatment, but it works just as well on many parts of the body:
- Jawline
- Neck
- Arms
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Stomach
How to Prepare for Skin Tightening
In the days and weeks before your skin tightening appointment, there are a few steps you can take to prepare your body and skin for the procedure. By following these pre-treatment instructions, you’ll get the best results possible from each session:
Avoid Sun Exposure
Firstly, you’ll want to avoid sun exposure as much as you can for at least two weeks before your appointment. This includes tanning, either naturally or artificially. Tanned skin can render the treatment less effective, and burns can make it unsafe. If you’re currently very tanned, consider waiting a few weeks and letting it fade before coming in for a skin-tightening treatment.
If you must go out into the sun, consider wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves or a sun hat. Also, never leave the house without an SPF of 30 or above as this will protect your skin from harmful rays and prevent burning.
Simplify Your Skincare Routine
Also for at least two weeks before your session, you should simplify your skincare routine and only use gentle, fragrance-free products to cleanse and moisturize. You’ll also want to avoid harsh, drying ingredients.
You should also avoid more intense treatments like microdermabrasion and chemical peels. These are great treatments with many benefits of their own, but they shouldn’t mix with laser skin tightening procedures.
Lastly, you should also avoid topical products that cause photosensitivity for at least three days before your appointment. This includes ingredients like hydroxy acids, retinol, salicylic acids, and benzoyl peroxide.
Avoid Fillers and Injections
You should also avoid treatments like Botox, dermal fillers, and other injectable products for at least two weeks before your laser skin tightening session.
Avoid Topical Products on the Day of
On the day of your appointment, avoid using all topical products. This includes lotions, creams, oils, and makeup. It’s best to arrive clean and bare-faced. This not only means you’ll have the best chance at optimal results but we’ll save time by not having to remove anything from your skin!
You can use gentle cleansers and other skincare products in the days leading up to your treatment, just not on the morning of!
What to Expect From Skin Tightening
So you’ve gotten yourself all prepared for your skin tightening treatment and your skin is ready to go; what does the process look like and what results can you expect?
- Most skin tightening sessions last about 30 minutes, on average. You can be in and out in a single afternoon!
- No downtime or recovery is needed after treatment as it does not cause damage or break the skin.
- All skin tones and types are suitable candidates for skin tightening treatments.
- To see full and optimal results, most need an average of six to eight treatments.
- You can start seeing minimal results after two or three treatments.
- Results can last anywhere from a few months to years depending on your skin type and the aging process. Maintenance treatments are recommended every few months to maintain results indefinitely.
Post Treatment Tips
Although the treatment is safe and gentle on your body and skin, there are still a few things you can do after your session to optimize results and keep your skin healthy:
- Some mild redness and swelling are normal. Aloe vera or other gentle cooling treatments can help.
- Always wear sun protection including an SPF lotion when going out, even if it’s not sunny.
- Avoid excessive heat such as hot tubs or saunas for about 24 hours after treatment.
- Avoid topical products that cause photosensitivity for at least three days after treatment.
- If you’re getting multiple treatments, it’s best to space them out by about four weeks.
There are very few risks associated with this treatment, but failing to follow post-treatment instructions will increase your risk of things like burning and scarring. It’s best to take care of your skin and protect it properly following these treatments. If you do, you’ll remain as safe and comfortable as possible.
